Sub-Zero freezer problems, defined
Temperature
The compartment is not holding the number it is set to, in either direction.
- Defrost cycle
- A brief rise that repeats on a daily rhythm and clears itself, which is the defrost cycle working rather than failing.
- Failure to recover
- A cabinet that restarted with the power, runs, and still never comes back down to the temperature it was holding.
- Freezer box
- The insulated cabinet rather than the machinery — liner, foam, door and seal — and what it means when it no longer keeps cold in.
- Not freezing
- Powered, audible and working all day, yet settling somewhere above freezing — the one symptom three separate circuits produce.
- Over-cooling
- Colder than it was asked to be: a compartment that runs past its set point because nothing ends the run.
- Sensor offset
- The panel and the food disagreeing about the same compartment, which happens when the control's sensor no longer reads true.
- Stratification
- A standing gap between the top and the bottom of one compartment, which is an air-movement fault rather than a cooling one.
- Temperature drift
- Steady, but steady at the wrong number: a few degrees above the set point, with the compressor running far longer than it rests.
Frost and Ice
Ice where there should be none: the back wall, the floor, the door edge, the walls.
- Air leak at the seal
- Frost gathered at the rim of the opening rather than the rear panel, because the seal is no longer meeting the cabinet.
- Drain blockage
- A flat plate of ice under the lowest basket, built up by defrost water that never made it out of the cabinet.
- Frost sheet
- A continuous glaze across the rear panel, left by a defrost cycle that is no longer clearing the coil behind it.
- Meltwater tracking
- A wet stripe down the liner, left by defrost water that missed the trough and ran forward into the compartment.
Drawers and Doors
A freezer drawer that has stopped moving, or stopped closing onto its seal.
- Drawer out of flush
- A drawer that stops short of its seal, held off by ice on the runners, a gasket gone hard, or a load standing too tall at the back.
- Frozen drawer
- A drawer welded in place by ice across its seal or its runners, which is an ice problem wearing the disguise of a broken mechanism.
Noise and Alarms
Sounds and warnings the cabinet makes when something inside it has changed.
- Blade strike
- A whir that has sharpened into a scrape or a rattle, made by the circulating fan blade catching ice built up in its housing.
- Door ajar alarm
- The cabinet's own warning that one of its doors or drawers has been left standing open rather than pulled properly shut.
